A Blog from a Catholic Seminarian in Rome

About Me

I am a Roman Catholic seminarian from the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City.  It has been an exciting journey over the last few years and I am looking forward to sharing my thoughts and experiences as I continue towards the possibility of being ordained a Catholic priest.

    Hi Brian,
We just got your Christmas card! We feel so blessed to get a card from the Vatican and to hear you are doing well.

Christmas brought us the biggest snow storm in the history of Oklahoma (14 inches and 50+ mile per hour wind)! I bet people around here will think twice before they wish for a white Christmas again! Christmas eve mass was cancelled. We stayed cozy at home and listened to the CD of Fr. Tom playing the church organ.. What a blessing. If he hasn’t sent you a copy, be sure and ask for one.

    God Bless and keep you,
    Kelly, Carl and D’Angela

Brian, We haven’t met, but I am a member of Knights of Columbus Norman Council 8523. We made a small scholarship contribution to you last year and think we likely will again this year–at least I hope so.

It must have been truly inspirational to meet the Holy Father. I’ve had the privilege to see him 3 times, but not meet him. On a recent trip to the Holy Land I stayed in the same room at the Notre Dame Center in Jerusalem he did when he accompanied John Paul II there in 2000, so I feel a closeness to him, even though I haven’t met him.

When I was in high school, in the late 1950s, we had an assistant pastor from the Archdiocese of Omaha who was sent out to our church/school to gain pastoral experience. He went back to the NAC in Rome and then to the Catholic University in Washington.

His name was Carl Peter and he died young, about 1990, as I recall. There is a chair in homiletics at NAC and one in ecumenism at the Catholic U named for him. He worked closely with Avery Cardinal Dulles for some time and when I happend to meet the Cardinal a few years ago he recalled Fr. Carl fondly. Who would have thought I would have had a friend in common with the Cardinal!

Fr. Carl and I became friends and he got me a scholarship to Creighton U in Omha, a Jesuit U. If it hadn’t been for Fr. Carl, I might not have gone to college.

Hope you don’t mind me sharing this with you, but it is a small world afterall. Be well, God bless your journey, and I’ll add you to my prayer list.

  6. Brian – thank you for your discernment of your vocation and consideration of the priesthood. It’s a very special calling and so often taken for granted by the rest of us.

    Thank you,
    Matt
